After-Hours Home and Car Lockouts: What Happens When You Call

A lockout at 11 p.m. feels worse than the same lockout at noon. The process is the same, though, and knowing it helps you stay calm.

What counts as after hours

Evenings, weekends and holidays. Our listed hours are Monday through Sunday, all day, so a dispatcher answers. Availability of a locksmith near you varies with the hour.

Getting a realistic window

The dispatcher asks where you are and what is locked. You get an estimate of price and arrival. Loop 101 traffic, event days at Westgate and other calls all affect timing.

Checking you belong there

Expect to show ID that matches the address, or the vehicle registration. If your ID is locked inside, the locksmith may open the door and check it inside with you.

Rekeying afterwards

If your keys were lost or stolen rather than locked inside, rekey the lock the same night if you can. Otherwise whoever has the keys has your address too.

Getting ready for next time

Keep a spare with someone you trust, not under the mat. Put the locksmith's number in your phone now.

Questions

Is after-hours service more expensive?

Ask the dispatcher for the estimate for your call. Starting prices are on the price list.

Can you open a car with the engine running?

Yes. It is a common call, and the car is usually opened without damage.
